Gokulram Vasanthi

A peculiarly intriguing man indeed! He catches your attention the moment he indignantly, almost proudly claims that he doesn’t know great English and loves Tamil. Gokulram Vasathi started riding at the age of 11 with his brother’s bike which he used to sneak out. After his mechanical engineering, during a conversation with his biking friends, an idea dawned upon them to ride to Leh, the so called ‘mecca’ of riders in India. The plan soon extended to doing a cross country ride from Kanyakumari to Leh. While his friends chose powerful, bigger two wheelers, Gokulram made a humble choice and decided to derive his adrenaline rush from what no one would imagine – a 1995-model M-80 (Indian equivalent to the C 90, Honda) . After restoring it with a second-hand bore procured from Pudupet, and getting a fitness certificate from the RTO he was ready to ride.  On july 6th, 2013 Gokulram set off from chennai on his maiden voyage. From Chennai, he rode through cities of Hyderabad, Nagpur, Jhansi, Agra, Delhi, Amritsar, Pathankot, Srinagar, Kargil, Leh, Khardung La, Nubra Valley, Pangong and into Spiti Valley. He also rode back all the way to Chennai and then down to Kanyakumari. He covered 10,700kms in 40 days across 15 states. While his friends would zip past on 200/300cc bikes, our man was perfectly content flying by on his 74cc two-wheeler. With a prosthesis leg and only one thumb and little finger on his right hand, Gokulram Vasanthi is one of the finest riders on road and track. It is no surprise that his friends have nicknamed him as ‘Terror’.
